Why some things evolve good and others... Well...

So, I was thinking to myself about back when Sonic used to be fun. Then I remembered how SEGA has butchered it as of recent. Then I remembered how Mario has retained his originality and joy throughout his almost 30 years a character. Now, the question "Why can some things maintain it's old charm, and others not?" Now, its all in the general gameplay. Mario is about getting to point A to point B without death. Pretty basic. Now, Sonic is that but with added "Speed". Showing speed in a 2D game can be achieved better than a 3D game, where everything not only has forward, back and up, but now has forward, back, up, down, left, right, and everything in between. Now things have Volume; Depth. It can seem slower. Trying to maintain things like Loops and Bouncepads can't be achieved as well. Mario had some powerups to keep him alive, now he has a life meter. Not too bad, he gets some new powerups. In recent times, they brought it back and it still stays ok. Sonic's "stay alive from collecting rings" is better in 2D because they are always keeping you from death, but in the modern games, it's a hassle. They are too common in levels, not thoughtfully put in. The N64 was made for Super Mario 64. Sonic Adventures was made for the Dreamcast. Nintendo created a console for people who wanted a good game. They created a system so people could just have fun. Sonic Adventures was made for sales. But hey, maybe not. Probably though. They did. This is Kyle, logging off.
